I am Cleo Hartley, and this is where I write about the pleasures of eating out. I am not a chef and I have never run a restaurant. I am simply a devoted diner who believes that a good meal in a good room is one of the finest things ordinary life offers, and that knowing how to enjoy it well is a skill worth taking seriously.

I started this blog after years of scribbling notes on the backs of receipts, trying to work out why some evenings stayed with me while others faded by the next morning. The answers, it turned out, had as much to do with attention, timing, and the room as with the cooking itself.

What you will find here is not reviews and not rankings. It is a running set of thoughts on how to be a better, happier guest at the table, whether you are working through a long tasting menu, eating alone at a counter, or sharing a sprawl of plates with the people you love most.
